👩‍⚕️ Bipolar in Black Communities: Clearing Up The Misconceptions!

Hi guys! 😁 ❤️ 👋 It's Dr. Za-za here, your friendly mental health doctor. I have a lot of people who come to me with questions about mental illness, and one of the most common illnesses people ask me about is Bipolar Disorder.

Today I'd like to share with you some facts about this disorder, as well as some helpful tips on how you can manage it if you or anyone you know has it. A lot of people are confused by bipolar disorder because they think it means someone has two different personalities—and that the person can switch between them quickly and often. That's actually not how it works at all! Bipolar disorder is a chronic mental illness that causes shifts in mood, energy, and activity levels. People who have bipolar disorder will go through episodes where they feel really high (the manic phase), then really low (the depressive phase), then back again—and these phases can last for months at a time without treatment. The symptoms in the manic phase can include agitation, high energy levels, racing thoughts or rapid speech, reckless behavior, and delusions. The depressive phase has symptoms like low energy, withdrawal from others and activities, feelings of shame or guilt, sadness, and hopelessness.

Thank You,
